President Trump scrapped apparent plans to leave the White House for Labor Day on Monday, opting to stay in to make calls on trade, according to an aide.
Trump was spotted outside the White House in a polo shirt and white hat shortly before 11 a.m., chatting with staffers before returning back inside a short time later.
White House pool reporters covering the president's movements had gathered in press vans as Trump came outside the building before the reporters were dismissed for the day.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told The Hill in a statement that Trump "stayed at the [White House] to make calls specifically on trade and other international issues."
The president spent Saturday and Sunday at his golf club in Northern Virginia about 30 minutes outside Washington, prompting speculation he may have been headed to the same destination on Monday.
A Virginia State Police squad car was parked outside the White House, and Secret Service agents were seen wearing khakis and polos, according to pool reporters.
Trump sent a flurry of tweets throughout the day on Monday covering a range of subjects. He celebrated Labor Day, attacked a top union leader, blasted John Kerry's refusal to rule out a 2020 presidential run and attacked Attorney General Jeff Sessions over charges filed last month against two Republican congressmen.
