Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on Sunday said she hopes President Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen will continue to release audio recordings of conversations he had with Trump because, she said, the tapes could reveal more about "this president, his schemes, his lying, his payoffs."
"They can lie all they want to," she told MSNBC. "It's all going to come out in the wash."
"I am convinced that in the final analysis they are not going to be able to be successful with the kind of lying that they are doing," Waters continued. "It is obvious. I hope that the other tapes that are in possession of Mr. Cohen will be revealed and we'll find out more about this president, his schemes, his lying, his payoffs."
[post_ads]Audio recordings made by Cohen of his private conversations with the president came to light last week after Cohen's lawyer, Lanny Davis, who is also a columnist for The Hill, released the tapes to CNN. CNN aired the recordings, setting off a firestorm among the Trump camp.
In the recordings, then-candidate Trump and Cohen appeared to discuss plans to buy the rights to the story of a former Playboy model, Karen McDougal, who alleged to have had an affair with the president in 2006.
Cohen can be heard urging Trump to buy the rights to McDougal's story, which was purchased by American Media Inc., the publisher of the National Enquirer. The Enquirer, however, never ran the story.
Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, has insisted Trump "didn't do anything wrong," but Cohen's lawyer has repeatedly insisted that Trump had advance knowledge of McDougal's story.
"This is not a man shocked when Mr. Cohen says, 'We have to make payments,' " Davis, said on CNN last week. "Listen to the tapes. This is not a man shocked about Karen McDougal."
Waters, who has been one of Trump's most vocal critics, often calls for the president's impeachment. Trump has lashed out at Waters and called her a "low IQ individual" at a public event.
