President Trump on Monday made light of the rumors about first lady Melania Trump's public absence last month following her time spent recovering from a routine medical procedure.
Trump praised his wife's intelligence and style during a rally in South Carolina for Gov. Henry McMaster (R).
"She had an operation a few weeks ago. She's fine," Trump said, referencing the first lady's surgery in mid-May for a benign kidney condition.
Melania Trump did not appear publicly for a few weeks following her procedure, prompting speculation about the severity of her condition.
"But they had all kinds of projections," Trump said. "They said she got a facelift. No. I would let you know. They couldn't hide that one for long."
"They said she left me and moved to New York," he added.
"The only thing they wouldn't say is what happened," he continued. "And she's private. She doesn't want to talk about things."
The first lady made headlines earlier this week and received massive backlash when she boarded a plane to visit a child detention center in Texas wearing a jacket that read "I really don't care. Do U?"
Her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, said that the jacket was not intended to send a message.
The president, however, took to Twitter to declare that the wardrobe choice was directed at the media.
